Home Languages and Higher Education

Sept 19 & 20, 2018
University of Aruba

The University of Aruba is organizing a multidisciplinary symposium on home languages and higher education.  Institutions of higher education have roles that extend beyond education into research and social service. In this symposium, we will focus on fulfilling these three functions through the study of the characteristics, use and role of home languages, the education of home languages, as well as the responsibility for safeguarding and promoting home languages.

You are invited to submit a proposal for a presentation or a poster on one of the themes of the symposium. The presentations will be 20 minutes. The posters (A1-size) will be intended for face to face discussions of ongoing research.

The themes include but are not limited to:

  • Multilingual societies

  • Language, teaching and education

  • Language, governance and law

  • Language and economy

  • Language and media

  • Language and globalization

  • Language and inclusion

  • Language, status and power

  • State traditions, decolonization and language regimes

We especially encourage proposals with multidisciplinary approaches in regard to the use, study and policy of home languages.

The deadline for proposal submission for both presentations and posters is 4 p.m. on June 28. Final notification of acceptance will be no later than July 31. Please send your proposal to

Proposals for both individual papers and posters should be 500 words maximum. The proposal should be submitted in English.

The working language for this symposium is English.
